Upper West Side Decoration

Architectural and interiors photography of the decoration of a luxury residential apartment in the Upper West Side, New York

Photographed in a refined Upper West Side apartment, this interior design project reflects a carefully curated dialogue between contemporary art, sculptural lighting, and tactile materials. Designed by Atelier François Merlet, the space balances elegance and creativity through a thoughtful selection of artworks and design pieces that bring depth and personality to the interiors.

Art plays a central role throughout the apartment. In the living area, a mixed-media collage on paper — Birthing a New Sky: Manuscript 1 and 2 by Saya Woolfalk (2021) — anchor the space with vibrant color and conceptual depth. Part of Woolfalk’s Birthing a New Sky series, the works draw from science fiction and fantasy to reinterpret the American landscape tradition, exploring ideas of cultural hybridity and utopian futures.

The material palette is equally expressive. A hand-knotted Splash rug by Deirdre Dyson, crafted from Tibetan wool and pure silk, evokes the movement and reflections of sea water through fluid shapes in shades of blue and off-white. Lighting elements function as sculptural accents, including the Cloud chandelier by Apparatus, Lantern sconces by Studio Rob Diaz in porcelain and brass, and a floor lamp by Pierre Yovanovitch.

In the entryway, three framed works by Studio K.O.S (formerly Tim Rollins and K.O.S.) introduce a more graphic and literary dimension. Created with abstract watercolor blotches layered over pages from George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the pieces bring a subtle tension between text, image, and abstraction.

Photographed as an interior design project in New York, this Upper West Side apartment highlights Atelier François Merlet’s approach to creating layered, art-driven spaces where contemporary design and fine art coexist seamlessly.
